The possibilities are endless and never the same. Simple to elaborate, you can design your own landscape accents for a economically friendly price. Container gardening may spruce up a dull looking patio area, deck, balcony, or doorstep. Many homeowners have an area that may just need a little extra “something” to get that astonished look from friends and family. When choosing a container, consider what will be grown in it, how often do you want to water, and if it will accent what you are putting in it. If you have limited space, and time is sparse, container gardening may be for you. Annuals, perennials, herbs, and even vegetable gardening can soften any backyard or doorstep. Fresh produce within reach of your fingertips? Sounds good to me.
Are you energetic and good with tools? Do it yourself landscaping may be a great way to improve your home, raise it’s value, and have a great outdoor living area or gardens. The key to success is having a great, well thought out landscape plan. Making proper selections on plants and landscape materials, is necessary to create a project that will keep its function and value over time. If it is your first effort, having a step by step game plan will save a lot of wasted time, work, and money. Getting the right materials, in the correct quantity, and at the time you want can be difficult. Working with a professional and purchasing materials in blocks with phased delivery times can save many headaches and be cheaper in the long run. It also will let you use your work time efficiently. Done right, this can be a very rewarding and enjoyable experience.
Every spring our perennial suppliers send us their new catalog for the coming year. This might sound odd, but I always look forward to sitting down and going through it. Why? Because, there are always new varieties of perennials that have been “put through the paces” so to speak and have proven to be great additions to the landscape. Some that come to mind are Geranium ‘Tiny Monster’ and Geranium ‘Jolly Bee’. ‘Tiny Monster’ is a very strong grower with a large mounding habit and violet- purple flowers that bloom from late spring through the summer. ‘Jolly Bee’, which has been labeled “A Proven Winner”, has a more compact mounding habit with abundant deep blue flowers. It also blooms throughout the summer. There are also some new varieties of Echinacea (coneflower) that are now available that can enhance the color palette of your landscape. Once limited to to a pinkish purple or white flower color, the new Echinacea “Big Sky series” offers the additional flower color choices of magenta, golden yellow, peach, intense orange, or rose. These, and many other tried and true perennials, can be an economical way to spice up a new or existing landscape design by adding just the right seasonal color to your plantings. Have I peaked your interest? If so, give us a call to see how we can colorize your landscaping!
I have been getting requests for landscape renovation at a steadily increasing rate lately, now that the spring weather
is upon us. This year more than ever folks are looking into modifications of their existing landscapes rather than a complete overhaul. If you have lived with your Landscape for a few years, more than likely you can think of at least one way it could be improved. Adding more color, transplanting something that would work better somewhere else to that location, adding boulders, removing certain materials that either haven’t done well, or you’re just not thrilled with.
This is the best time of our growing season to transplant material and give it the best chance for survival. Additionally, now is a great time to plant all types of trees, shrubs, and perennials found in our 16 acre nursery. Give us a call or visit our website to learn how we can assist you in bringing your dreams to life!
